Finnish Baseball
The club
We, Puna-Mustat (Est 1941) are on a mission to bring back the Finnish baseball culture to Helsinki. Our goal is to create the largest junior club by 2030 and for the men’s team to make their way up to Superpesis (top league) by 2027.
We are building the new arrival of the national game to the capital city with a progressive, liberal, and urban approach.
Our men’s team plays in 1st division (Ykköspesis) and our women’s team plays in 3rd division (maakuntasarja). We have junior and adult teams for all ages and skill levels and we welcome players of all ages to join our teams and practices throughout the year.
Finnish baseball for everyone
Puna-Mustat strives to make Finnish baseball accessible for everyone in Helsinki (and apparently internationally). The club has junior operations with teams in all age groups and competitive adult teams for both women and men. We organise a league, Kuntopesis, for hobbyists and a weekly Pesistiistai concept (Finnish baseball Tuesday) on 2 different locations in Helsinki during the summer where everyone from all ages can join and play for free with our gear and with the help of our instructors.
We invite new juniors to join our teams at any time of the year and for beginners aged 7–12 years we organise a 5-week Finnish baseball school, Starttipesis, every spring and autumn in 5 locations across Helsinki to make it easy to get started. For 4–6 olds we organise a versatile sports practice concept, Pesisliikkari, also in 5 locations, where children exercise and have fun while learning Finnish baseball skills.
Finnish baseball and Helsinki belong together
Finnish baseball was originally invented in Helsinki and our mission is to bring the Finnish baseball culture back to the city. For a long time, the sport has been popular primarily in smaller cities across Finland. Puna-Mustat has a successful history within the sport but our last championship with men dates back to 1973 and with women to 1977. Today, a major part of Finnish baseball-related Google searches are made in Helsinki so the potential fan base in Helsinki is massive and our job is to capitalise on it.
Today we play our matches at an old stadium with quite basic facilities but we have made our plan public to build a proper stadium by 2027 to Meilahti. See article on the main news outlet Helsingin Sanomat on our plans here.
